Chapter 18

Friday afternoon, Riley blinked a few times but it didn’t clear the blur of the screen.

My eyes are tired. She looked away from the screen. Glanced outside and even rose from the desk to stretch her legs. Eric had left for a security meeting with Savannah’s team. Riley expected he’d be gone for some time.

She returned to the desk and tried slogging through files again. But the blurriness persisted.

I need my glasses.

Too bad those now resided at the bottom of the ocean off Harlow’s island.

Harlow.

Hmm. A half-baked plan formed in the back of her mind. Since she needed a much longer break from reading these boring files she padded to the door. Harlow and Verity might be able to assist her with this current problem.

She located Harlow in an office on the main floor. A nice space with a large table and comfy office chairs on wheels.

“Hello.” Harlow greeted when she knocked.

“Hello.” She entered the space and helped herself to a chair.

“What’s up?” Harlow shut her laptop.

“I need my glasses.”

Harlow paused in taking a sip of an energy drink. “Aren’t they on the bottom of the ocean?”

“My favorite pair are. But I have a backup pair at my parent’s house.”

One of Harlow’s brown eyebrows rose. Intrigue emanated from her. “What are you thinking?”

Riley checked her calendar again. The date was right. “My parents have a long-standing engagement this evening. They’ll be out of the house. I’d be appreciative if you and Verity could do your magic and retrieve those glasses for me. Maybe a few other items as well.” Such as a box of clothes high on a shelf in her childhood closet kept for emergencies.

“I’m sure we can handle that. Your parents won’t be there?”

“No. But they do have a decent security system. I helped my dad install it.”

“Nice.” The purr in Harlow’s voice made Riley grin.

“I figured you and Verity would enjoy a new opportunity to keep up your skills.”

“I know I would. I’m guessing she’ll enjoy the exercise.” Harlow sent a quick text, probably to Verity.

Their friend soon showed up. “Where’s Keith?” She looked around the room.

“He’s in a meeting with the twins. They had some things to discuss about Keith’s new business venture.”

“His consulting firm?” Verity asked.

Riley hadn’t heard much of these plans, only the tidbits that Eric dropped. She’d learned enough that her skills didn’t seem like a match for Keith’s engineering consultation business. She was happy for him though. He would probably remain occupied with a business like that.

Harlow might keep him busy with Horgate Industries business needs. The base could probably use his services as well.

Should I go into business for myself?

Riley pondered that. Maybe. But she didn’t know if she wanted to chase clients and meet their demands. “Verity, do Gilmore and Cian need help with their business?”

Verity’s mouth dropped open. Not in the literal sense, because she’d never do that, but in the astonished sense. “Yes, they do. As many consultants as they can find.” Her eyes narrowed. “You’re a computer expert.
